What Is AEO? Answer Engine Optimization Explained
AEO is optimizing to be quoted by ChatGPT, Perplexity and AI Overviews rather than just ranked. What it is, how it differs from SEO, and what actually moves it.
Answer engine optimization (AEO) is the practice of making a page easy for an AI system to read, quote and attribute. Where classic SEO competes for a position in a list of links, AEO competes to be the source a generated answer cites.
The distinction matters because the two can come apart. A page can rank well and still be useless to an answer engine — and increasingly, that's traffic you never see.
AEO, GEO, and why there are two acronyms
You'll see AEO (answer engine optimization) and GEO (generative engine optimization) used almost interchangeably. GEO came out of academic work on optimizing content for generative systems; AEO grew out of the older featured-snippet and voice-search world. In practice they describe the same job, and arguing about the label is a waste of a morning. We say “AI visibility” because it names the outcome rather than the acronym.
How AEO differs from SEO
Most AEO advice is just technical SEO with the volume turned up, but three differences are real:
- The unit of value is a passage, not a page. A search engine ranks your document. An answer engine lifts a specific sentence or two. So the question shifts from "is this page relevant?" to "is there a cleanly extractable claim in here?"
- Rendering is less forgiving. Googlebot renders JavaScript. Several AI crawlers don't, or do it unreliably. Content that exists only after hydration is content an answer engine may simply never see — a failure mode that has largely stopped mattering for Google and very much still matters here.
- There is no ranking to inspect. You can check position 4 in Search Console. There is no equivalent report telling you that ChatGPT cited you last Tuesday. Measurement is genuinely harder, and anybody offering you a precise "AI rank" number is selling something.
What actually moves AI visibility
Nobody outside the labs knows the source-selection rules. But the mechanical failure modes are knowable, and fixing them is most of the work:
- Server-render the content that matters. The single highest-leverage fix, and it costs you nothing elsewhere.
- Answer the question immediately under the heading. Two sentences, self-contained, no dependency on three earlier paragraphs. Then elaborate underneath. This is the change that most improves quotability per minute spent.
- Write headings as questions people ask. "How much does X cost?" is matchable; "Pricing" is not.
- Be specific and checkable. Dates, figures, versions, named sources. A model can safely quote "cuts build time from 40s to 6s"; it cannot safely quote "blazing fast".
- Use real semantic structure. Headings in order, lists as lists, tables as tables. A layout built from styled divs is invisible to a parser.
- Add structured data that fits — FAQ, HowTo, Article, Organization. It disambiguates what you are; it doesn't conjure authority.
- Decide your robots.txt deliberately. See AI crawlers and robots.txt.
What doesn't work
Two things are worth naming because they're being sold hard right now. Stuffing your page with "as an AI language model" bait or hidden prompt-injection text is a reputational risk with no demonstrated upside. And "submit your site to ChatGPT" services are, as of writing, selling something that doesn't exist — there is no submission endpoint; these systems find you by crawling and retrieval like everything else.
How to measure it
Honestly: imperfectly. Three things that do work — ask the answer engines questions your page should win and see who gets cited; watch referral traffic from chat.openai.com, perplexity.ai and friends in your analytics; and audit the mechanical signals directly. The free AI visibility checker does the third: it scores extractability separately from SEO and tells you which specific things are blocking a citation.
AEO in 2026 is mostly hygiene that good technical writing already implies. The sites that win it are the ones that were already clear, specific and server-rendered — not the ones chasing the acronym.
